Martello Tower No. 1 (West)

The Martello Tower was built during the American Civil War but did not see action. It was used by the US Navy for target practice.
The tower served with a military presence during the American Civil War, the Spanish American War, both World Wars and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In 1906 Battery Inman (named after a Revolutionary War Hero, Captain Shadrack Inman) was built into the structure. The battery housed 2 x 3 inch guns'
The tower was also used for storing 2 x 90mm mobile guns that formed part of the West Martello Battery just outside the tower.

The tower now houses a garden centre.
