Memorial Englaender Augsburg

In the city center of Augsburg, an "Erinnerungsband" (memorial band) was installed at the house of Dr. Paul ENGLAENDER and Hedwig ENGLAENDER

Paul Englaender was born on 4-7-1884 in Jarotchin (Poland)
Hedwig Englaender-Steinfeld was born on 4-8-1891 in Augsburg.
Their deportation to Auschwitz was scheduled for March 8, 1943. They committed suicide together 7-3-1943.

Paul Englaender studied dentistry in Breslau and Freiburg and passed his state examination in 1906. His military service began in 1916, and in 1918 he worked as a dentist to treat jaw injuries in a field hospital.
After his marriage, he entered the higher social circles through his in-laws and became a respected member of the religious community.
Due to his place of birth he was considered an Eastern Jew.
The boycott of Jews began in the Nazi state in 1933. SA and SS men prevented customers from entering Jewish shops, law firms and doctor's offices.
Jews were increasingly excluded from social life and sports.
On April 1, 1933, he was blacklisted and his admission to statutory health insurance was withdrawn. On January 31, 1939, his permit to continue practicing his profession expired.
The family decided to emigrate, the children left for the US, but because he was considered a Polish citizen, the couple was not allowed to emigrate together.
In 1941, Jews were banned from emigrating and they were forced to remain in Augsburg, where repression increased day by day. They were given mandatory names and had to wear a yellow badge. Their deportation to Auschwitz was scheduled for March 7, they committed suicide together the day before.
