Crashsite P-51K Mustang 44-11655 "Poop Shooter 2"

An information board recalls the North American Mustang "Poop Shooter II" that crashed on
25 February 1945 crashed in this area.

US pilot First Lieutenant Leonard Stanley Olson, 21, USAAF was the only crew member of Mustang 44-11655. He had left Duxford base (Cambridgeshire) that morning as one of 78th Fighter Group's P-51s that were going to provide support to the bombers on the return route from Berlin.

Olson whose aircraft had probably been hit by anti-aircraft fire near the bridges at Zwolle, managed to leave the aircraft using his parachute. The Mustang crashed in a field between the Laanzichtweg and Bovenheigraaf in Oldebroek. Due to the rather strong west-south-west wind, Olson parachuted down on the grounds of Shooting Camp Oldebroek and was wounded on his hand. He was captured and transported, first to the "Air Force POW assembly point Holland", from where he was transferred to the satellite camp of Dulag Luft Oberursel (Frankfurt), Dulag Luft Welzlar.
