Memorial Municipality Limbourg

On the old Limbourg town hall, two commemorative plaques have been installed in memory of the victims of the German offensive at the beginning of World War I on August 9th, 1914. Also, the monument indicates the to terrorize the population was looted by order and 28 houses set on fire.

Commemorated are:

COLLETTE Émile, civilian murdered by the Germans, no further details known.

DECHAINEUX Nicolas, civilian murdered by the Germans, no further details known.

Madame KAIRIS-STROEDER, civilian murdered by the Germans, no further details known.

RENARD Auguste, civilian murdered by the Germans, no further details known.

BAILLY Jean, age 34, civilian executed by the Germans.

The right panel commemorates the fallen soldiers from Limbourg.

BERGER Martin, age 21, soldier with the 1st Grenadiers regiment, died of wounds from shrapnel on September 15th, 1915 at Kaaskerke (West-Flanders).

BODSON Jean, age 23, war volunteer, soldier, clarioncaller with the 19th line regiment, died of wounds from shrapnel sustained at Lobrug (West Flanders) on June 1th, 1918 and died that same day in the hospital at Hoogstade.

BOSTEN Pierre/ Pieter, age 27, corporal in the 16th line regiment, died as a result of a fatal accident, drowned at Alveringem on June 16th, 1917.

BOURGARD Joseph, age unknown, soldier in the 1st regiment Carabiniers, missing ever since September 28th, 1918 at Paschendaele (Ypres, West-Flanders).

BRAYEUR Jacques, age 18 !, war volunteer, soldier with the 1st regiment Carabiniers, killed on June 2nd, 1918 at Adinkerke (West Flanders), after being hospitalized on May 17th, 1918 with gas poisoning and burns (combat gases such as mustard gas (Yperite) were not only lethal when inhaled, the gas also caused burns on the skin. With heavy exposure, the gas passed through clothes and could penetrate to the bone. Even doctors and nursing staff could fall prey to Yperite when undressing soldiers with gas injuries) at the hospital in Adinkerke, he died from the effects of his injuries sustained on June 2nd, 1918.

CLERFAYS Joseph, age 25, war volunteer, soldier at 6th regiment Hunters on foot, died on September 30th, 1918 at Rumbeke (West-Flanders).

COLLIGNON Adolphe, age 22, war volunteer, Adjutant at 6th regiment Hunters on foot, died on November 1st, 1918 at Ronsele (East Flanders) at the battle of the Leie.

DAHLEN Louis, age 23, soldier with the 8th line regiment, killed on August 23th, 1914 at Boninne (Namur/ Namur).

DELHAVEE Hubert, age 27, soldier with the 12th linieregiment, missing ever since 19th or 29th September 1914 at Kapelle-op-den-Bos (Flemish Brabant).

GERKENS Emile, age 33, soldier in the telegraph service, killed in action at Oostnieuwkerke (West Flanders) October 2nd, 1918.

NIEBES Jean, age 26, corporal with the 12th line regiment, killed Sept. 20th, 1914 at Londerzeel, St Jozef, Neeravert.

NYSSEN Auguste, age 21, war volunteer, soldier, died of Spanish flu at Bruges in the hospital of Sint-Michels (West Flanders) on Nov. 17th, 1918, 6 days after the armistice.

RADERMECKER Nicolas, age 24, soldier with the 8th line regiment, killed Sept. 29th, 1918 as a result of shrapnel to the upper body.

RAYP Joseph, war volunteer, soldier of the 14th line regiment, killed July 11th, 1917 as a result of shrapnel. Died during transport in ambulance.

WASSON Victor, age 26, adjutant in the 1st regiment Hunters on foot, killed on October 2nd, 1918 at Roeselare (West-Flanders).

WILLEMS Mathieu, age 28, artillery soldier with the Regiment Fortifiée de Liège (R.F.L.), killed at Angleur on September 1th, 1914.

They are also commemorated on the monument in Limbourg's central square .
