1914-18. A total of 1,057 men from Oceania serve in the Battalion du Pacifique. A Battalion des Tirailleurs du Pacific is also formed and is sent to Marseilles to load supply ships. Soldiers fought in France and Greece and 203 died in the service of France and are commemorated on the the memorial
In 1940 the voters on the islands chose to side with the Free French government of Charles de Gaulle and many islanders fought alongside Allied armies during WW2 in Tunisia, Italy and France. 87 men died in the service of the Free French Forces.
