Memorial Turteltaub Innsbruck

On January 27, 2024, three Zeitpunkte were placed for Amalie and Wolf Meier TURTELTAUB and Gita SCHARF.

Amalie TURTELTAUB- Wolfart, born 8-1-1871 in Stanislau (Ukraine), died in 1942 in Riga (Latvia)
Wolf Meier (Max) TURTELTAUB, born on 30-11-1867 in Bohorodczany (Ukraine)
died in 1942 in Riga (Latvia)
Margit (Gita) SCHARF, born on 12-2-1932 in Wörgl, died in 1942 in Riga (Latvia)

Wolf Meier Turteltaub and his wife Amalie Wolfart came from the Austrian part of Galicia. In 1905 they came to live in Innsbruck. In January 1911, Amalie bought the house at Defreggerstrasse 12 in the working-class district of Pradl where they opened a shop.
The rise of the National Socialists in 1938 had major consequences for the Turteltaub family. The store in Innsbruck was defaced and boycotted.
On the night of the pogrom on November 10, 1938, 70-year-old Wolf Meier was severely beaten by a group of criminals. They arrested him, his son, grandson and other family members to intimidate them into leaving Innsbruck. The family moved to a small apartment in Vienna. Some were able to go to safer places on a refugee ship.
From September 1941 the family had to wear the Jewish star. On January 26, 1942, the couple and their ten-year-old granddaughter Gita were deported from the Vienna Aspangbahnhof to Riga. From that moment on, all traces are lost.

The city of Innsbruck has taken a new path when it comes to commemorations.
On January 27, 2024, International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust, the new project "Zeitpunkte" was presented.
A hand-made bronze disc with a diameter of approximately eight centimeters and a thickness of three centimeters is mounted at eye level on light poles or posts in the immediate vicinity of the last freely chosen place of residence of the victims of the Nazi dictatorship. The person's name is on the round plaque, the "Zeitpunkt".
The inscription is engraved and sealed.
