Memorial Romen Innsbruck

Hedwig ROMEN, born on 24-12-1885 in Przeczno, Poland, died on 20-10-1942 in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Hedwig Romen, born Bendischewsky, was an accountant and lived in Innsbruck.
She belonged to Jehovah's Witnesses, a religious peace-loving community that defended and opposed many Nazi ideas, demands and laws. They continued to hold their meetings, which were forbidden. They also wanted to convince others of their religion and distributed their magazine, the "Watchtower."
Because of this, they were classified by the Nazis as an "anti-military organization."
In 1938 there were only 90 Jehovah members in Tyrol, 49 of whom were arrested.
On February 22, 1939, Hedwig Romen was arrested. On June 15, 1939 she arrived at the Ravensbrück concentration camp, from there she was taken to Auschwitz.
She died there on October 20, 1942, probably of typhus.

The city of Innsbruck has taken a new path when it comes to commemorations.
On January 27, 2024, International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust, the new project "Zeitpunkte" was presented.
A hand-made bronze disc with a diameter of approximately eight centimeters and a thickness of three centimeters is mounted at eye level on light poles or posts in the immediate vicinity of the last freely chosen place of residence of the victims of the Nazi dictatorship. The person's name is on the round plaque, the "Zeitpunkt".
The inscription is engraved and sealed.
