Stumblin Stones Panhuisstraat 15

This small brass plaque (Stolperstein or Stumbling Stone), placed on 27-6-2024, commemorate:

Joseph Mahler, born 1894, resistance fighter, fled Germany in 1935, deported to Belgium on 30-6-1937, arrested 21-3-1940 in Germany, interned in Westerbork on 11-4-1941 and murdered in Düsseldorf on 1-9-1943 .
Hedwig Mahler-Abraham, born 1897, fled Germany in 1935, deported to Belgium on 1-7-1937, arrested 21-3-1940 in Germany, interned in Westerbork on 11-4-1941, deported to Auschwitz on 14-9-1943 and murdered there on 17-9-1943.

A sad story...to say the least. Falsely accused of making and spreading anti-Nazi propaganda, which has never been proven. Gladly they would have given him, in their eyes a communist Jew, a show trial. Both were completely innocent and maintained this to the last. Very brave people; he was executed anyway for lack of evidence and she was deported to Auschwitz. Both did not survive the war.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a Concentration Camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
