Memorial Ivan Panfilov

Ivan Vasilyevich Panfilov (January 1, 1893, Moscow - November 18, 1941) was a Soviet general and posthumous Hero of the Soviet Union.

After the October Revolution and the start of the Russian Civil War, Panfilov volunteered to join the Red Army in 1918.
After Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, Panfilov began mobilizing reserves to send to the front. On July 12, he was appointed commander of the 316th Rifle Division, a new unit formed in Alma Ata. The division consisted mainly of reservists from the Kazakh and Kyrgyz Soviet Republics.

On November 18, 1941, during the Battle of Moscow, while Panfolov was briefing a group of journalists in the village of Guseniovo, the village was attacked by mortars. Panfilov was killed by a shell splinter.
