Memorial Lancaster W4840

On January 3, 1943, Lancaster I W4840 crashed near this location. The aircraft was on its way back from a mission over Germany when it was shot down by a night fighter. The crew consisted of four Englishmen and three Canadians. They all perished.

The British crew members pilot D.H.S. Lonsdale (31), flight engineer A.T. Riley (22), flight engineer, bomb aimer and nose turret gunner J.I. Morris (22) and dorsal turret gunner A.D. Smitherm are buried at Heiderust cemetery in Rheden.

The three Canadians were originally also buried in Rheden, but were later transferred to the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek: tail gunner R.L. Dickie (23), navigator K.R. Smith (25) and radio operator R.R. Moore (20).
