Memorial Afionas

This monument was erected in memory of the 48 sailors who died on December 29, 1940 on the Greek submarine "Proteus". Which was sunk by an Italian convoy.

This monument is also addressed to Lieutenant Gialopsos Ector. He was born in Afionas and was killed in 1996 when the helicopter he was in crashed during the "Imia conflict" with Turkey.

The torpedo behind the monument probably comes from the former NATO base in Palaiokastritsa.
