Memorial De Olifant Geraardsbergen

In the city park is the monument "De Olifant", a memorial for Geraardsbergen residents who lost their lives in Congo. Some have fallen in the service of civilization.
There is also a memorial plaque for Walter-Willy Martens, soldier who died in commanded service in Bujumbura on October 11, 1960, he was barely 20 years old.

"De Olifant" was inaugurated on July 10, 1949 at the initiative of the Colonial Circle of Geraardsbergen. It is a work by artist-photographer Théophile L'Haire.
