Great or Martini Church

The last fourteen days of the Second World War before Doesburg, in April 1945, the city suffered greatly and the population had to spend time in the cellars. The city is under Allied fire from the east while the Germans want to keep the IJssel as a defense line.

Shortly before the Germans withdrew behind the IJssel, on Sunday April 15, 1945 at ten past twelve in the afternoon they blew up the tower. The carillon, the organ and a large part of the church are also destroyed. The water tower and the windmill suffered the same fate that day.
