Cycling Route Maashees - Destroyed Silo

On October 20, 1944, at 3:45 in the afternoon, we were all startled by a tremendous explosion. The dynamite charge in the silo had done its destructive work. A towering flame and a cloud of black smoke rose from the silo. The mighty steel-concrete structure, which until then was the pride of Wanssum, collapsed. Wanssum's prosperity was destroyed, it seemed irreparable. People increasingly got the impression that the Germans would withdraw after thorough destruction of the vital parts.
