Cycling Route Maashees - Camp on the Heath

On October 1 1944, Holthees and Maashees were told to evacuate.
During the night of October 1 to 2, many families, singles and people in hiding came to Smits and Rijnders.
Everything they owned was brought with them. A lot of straw was strewn in the stable and barn and everyone looked for a place to sit or lie. The next day more families came. And on that day, six air raid shelters were dug.
Fallout shelters for one family or for two families. The singles and people in hiding moved in with the families. A total of 11 air raid shelters.
Some boys had gone to sleep in Rijnders' shed. The bomb shelters
are with Piet Smits in the orchard and with Frits Rijnders in the forest. This is how "The Good Hope Camp" was born at Rijnders, so called by the residents.
The chapel was built in 1968 in memory of the dark days of 1944.
