A pouwhenua (carved wooden post) dedicated to the 3600 men of the 28th (Maori) Battalion who fought on the battlefields of Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy during the Second World War and also commemorates the Maori and Pacific Island men who fought during the Great War. Erected in 2021.
The Battalion was formed in 1940 and was part of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. They earned a formidable reputation as a fighting force amongst both the Allies and German commanders and became the most highly decorated battalion in the New Zealand Army, including one Victoria Cross winner. The Battalion was disbanded in 1946.
