Royal Military Canal

The Royal Military Canal stretches 45 km from Cliff End near Hastings to Seabrook near Fookstone. The canal originated from an idea of Lieutenant Colonel Brown, the assistant quartermaster general, where they first wanted to completely flood the Romney and Walland swamps.

The Royal Military Canal was a large-scale coastal defense structure constructed between 1804 and 1809 to prevent the landing of Napoleon's troops on the coast of Romney Marsh and Walland Marsh and to separate it from the interior of the country.
