On the outside grounds of the cathedral, leading up to the war memorial garden, there is a bronze figure of a soldier of "The Buffs" on a stone pedestal with an inscription.
The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment), formerly the 3rd Regiment of Foot, was a line infantry regiment of the British Army, which originated in the English county of Kent and was based in Canterbury. In 1881 it became known as the Buffs (East Kent Regiment) under the Childers Reforms and was later renamed the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) on 3 June 1935.
