additional documentation:

Simon van der Horst was a textile trader. Part of his business was located in Amsterdam. His wife Clara and his children Karel and Branca lived in the house where you are now stands for. Simon had been living in Amsterdam for some time. After all, Jews were no longer allowed to travel by train. He was arrested there and sent to Westerbork on August 14, 1942 Auschwitz deported. There he was registered as a worker in the camp. According to the assignment of the Red Cross, he died on September 30, 1942. Mrs. van der Horst and her children belonged to the large group of Limburg Jews who died in August 1942 were called for 'labour expansion measures'. Beek residents were insisten exercised to go into hiding. The family did not dare to do that. On the day of the great Limburg Jewish deportation, August 25, the three were arrested, Clara and Branca at the station. That day they had permission to take the train to Roermond, where the physically and mentally disabled Branca had to be checked by a specialist in the hospital. Karel (15 years old) was at home with a friend. A resistance fighter from Geleen made one last attempt to persuade Karel to come with him, without success. A few hours later the municipal constable came to pick him up. This took him to the meeting point for Limburg Jews in Maastricht.
The house was sealed, and a thorough inventory list was drawn up. We know that Van der Horst upon his deportation included "1/2 kg getrocknete Äpfel, and 150 Maggiwürfel" inhad a house. Clara, Karel and Branca boarded the train to Auschwitz in Westerbork on August 28. Karel was among the 75 Limburg men who were knocked off the train in Cosel on August 29 to work in Jewish forced labor camps. He died a short time later, 'somewhere in Central Europe'. Clara and Branca were gassed upon arrival at Auschwitz
