Memorial Air Raid 10 april 1944

An US air raid on 10 April 1944 killed 20 passengers on the bus from Siena to Asciano and Chiusure and injured five.

A plaque was placed at the site of the attack on 25 April 2016 with the text:

"In memory of an incomprehensible and useless massacre

Following an American air attack on 10 April 1944, Easter Monday, twenty passengers were killed and five injured on the bus that connected Siena to Asciano and Chiusure.

Of the dead, thirteen are still remembered today, all from Asciano.
Azuena Bigelli, Renato Finetti, Elvira Guerrini, Anna Landi, Egisto Lippi, Maria Mancini, Ilva Marchetti in Farnetani, Pietro Micheli, Gino Nencini, Delfina Piochi in Giannettoni, Giovanni Parri, Guerrino Ravaglia, Linda Starnini.

The inhabitants of Asciano, still mindful of the heinous massacre, placed this plaque to remember the bloody and unjustifiable atrocities that every war brings with it and to invite all the peoples of the world to a future of peace."

The request to affix this commemorative plaque was made by Enrico Torpigliani, accepted and endorsed by the Municipal Administration, then led by Mayor Paolo Bonari.
