Auckland Cenotaph

Originally a wood and plaster temporary structure erected for ANZAC Day in 1922, it was a scaled down copy of the Edward Lutyens designed Cenotaph in London and erected in front of Auckland Town Hall The cenotaph was dismantled and stored in the Town Hall and erected for the next ANZAC day.
In 1928 the Returned Soldiers Association proposed a permanent structure at the new Auckland War Memorial Museum. On 28th November 1929 the Cenotaph was consecrated and the museum opened. Auckland held its first ANZAC day ceremony at the Cenotaph on 25 April 1930.
