This small brass stumbling stone commemorates:

Dirk Jacobus Spanjaard, born in 1911 and murdered on January 18, 1941 in Mauthausen concentration camp.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).

Stolpersteine ​​(stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of a residence of (usually Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim's name, date of birth and location (usually a concentration camp), and date of death. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: "A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
