The statue is in memory of the elderly who lived in the Jewish Pension Verdooner during the Second World War and were killed.
The statue was designed and made by artist Louise Schiffmacher from Teylingen. It was unveiled on March 28, 2024 on the waterfront.
During the Second World War, 39 Jewish residents lived at Weesperzijde 141. Leendert Pop (1859-1943) was one of them. He worked as a diamond cutter. At the age of 83, he was deported by the occupier, like all the other residents of the pension, and killed in an extermination camp.
