Memorial Admiral Chester Nimitz

Chester William Nimitz, 24 February 1885- 20 February 1966.
10 days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt appointed Nimitz as Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet (CINCPACFLT). Under his leadership the US Navy began it's recovery from Pearl Harbor and fought the Japanese at the Battles of Coral Sea and Midway before beginning the 'island hopping' campaign to recapture the territory occupied by the Japanese.

"They fought together as brothers in arms
They died together and now sleep side by side
To them we have a solemn obligation
The obligation to ensure that their sacrifice will help
to make this a better and safer world in which to live"
