This monument on the Pont des Cygnes over the Somme in Amiens commemorates Edmond Fontaine and Georges Quarante who fell in battle during the liberation of Montieres in 1944. It also commemorates the patriots who defended this bridge so the Allies could fight the Battle of Amiens.
The present bridge has replaced the one which existed here in 1944. That was captured intact by soldiers of the 11th Armoured Division of the British Army, after the charges laid on it by German defenders were removed by Lt D K Mackay, 612 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers. For that act, he was awarded the Miltary Cross.
