This memorial commemorates the aircrew and ground personnel killed during World War II who were operating from, and at, RAF Wattisham airfield.

From this airfield, the RAF carried out the first bombing raids on enemy targets with Bristol Blenheims of 107 and 110 Squadron on 4 September 1939.

From May 1944 until VE-day, 479th Fighter Group USAF was also based at Wattisham with P-38 Lighting and P-51 Mustang aircraft and carried out 351 missions over enemy territory from here.
