This memorial commemorates the perished crew members of the Lancaster ED555 of RAF 100 Squadron that crashed in this area.
On 20 October 1943, the Lancaster bomber ED555/HW-A of RAF 100 Squadron was returning from a bombing flight over Leipzig.
Somewhere over the city of Groningen, the plane was shot down by a German night fighter and exploded in mid-air between Stadspark and Eelderwolde.
The wreckage of the plane and the bodies of the crew members came down scattered over a large area near the Ter Borghlaan, just north of where the monument now stands.
Seven bog oaks were planted around the monument, one for each of the fallen crew members.
They fell for our freedom:
Pilot Officer Theodore L. Simpson 21 years
Sergeant Peter R. Cowling 20 years
Sergeant Alfred W.N. Lower 21 years
Sergeant Gerald J. Godseff 20 years
Sergeant Leonard Cohen 20 years
Sergeant Clarence W. Gibb 22 years
Warrent Officer II Douglas S. Storey 31 years.
We will remember them.
