Memorial Former Jewish School Hortusplantsoen

An vacational school for girls was located here from 1931. This E.J. van Detschool was named after a socialist trade unionist who initiated this schools in the interwar period.

In August 1941, the German occupying forces decreed that Jewish children could only attend Jewish schools and this Van Detschool was designated as a Jewish school. The school was used as such until September 1943, but when all children and teachers were deported after the big razzias, the school was closed. Hardly any of them returned from the camps.

The Van Detschool school still exists but no longer at this location. A plaque on the facade of the building commemorates this sad period.
