Along the bank of the small river Zoom, there are still the foundations of the old Zoom bridge, which was blown up by the retreating Germans on 27 October 1944, the day of Bergen op Zoom's liberation.
An information board has been erected stating:
'Here was originally the bridge over the Zoom built in 1932 by the NV Albouw company of Breda. At the time, a concrete construction was chosen over a cheaper wooden bridge as part of the work provision scheme. The bridge connected Van Overstratenlaan across the Zoom to Tuinderspad, then the arterial road to Halsteren.
On 27 October 1944, Bergen op Zoom's Liberation Day, the Germans blew up the bridge as they were driven out of the city by Canadian troops.
An emergency bridge was built in 1948, 60 metres west, replaced in 1979 by the current bridge, 100 metres east of here. Where you are standing now, the foundations of the bridge are on the left and right'.
This spot is only accessible via the footpath along Zoom and is also part of the Drakentanden walking route through Bergen op Zoom. https://www.routeyou.com/nl-nl/route/view/15248077
