Memorial Former Airfield A-1 9th USAAF

Almost immediately after d-day, the 834th Air Engineers Battalion began construction of the (Advanged Landing Ground) airfield A-1 St-Pierre-du-Mont (code name ‘Fry)’ here. The runway was made of perforated steel and about 1,500 metres long. A mobile radat of type RAF Ames 15GCI was installed to protect the airfield.

The airfield was commissioned on 11 June 1944 and on 17 June the 366th Fighter Group arrived, which were equipped with P47 Thunderbolt aircraft. Shortly afterwards, they were joined by the 401st Group flying P38 Lightning aircraft.

366 and 401 used the airfield until 5 September after which it was dismantled and returned to its owners. Today, apart from an information board and a memorial to the 366th Fighter Group, nothing remains of the airfield.
