Robert Matthew Beatham was born on 16 June 1894 in Glassonby, England, and went to Australia as a teenager.
He enlisted in early 1915 and went to France with his battalion of the Australian Imperial Force a year later. He was wounded twice: at Pozières in 1916 and at Passchendaele the following year.
Beatham's battalion saw action at Rosières-en-Santerre during the Battle of Amiens. When held up by machine guns, Beatham attacked four nests, killing or capturing his opponents. He had already been wounded and was killed while attacking another nest.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award that can be given to British and Commonwealth forces, for gallantry "in the face of the enemy".
