Information Board Bevertberg Forced Labor Camp

Information board about the Bevertberg forced labor camp.

The text on the board reads:
"The Bevertberg forced labour camp: In preparation for the Second World War, thousands of workers came to the Eifel in 1938 to build military installations. In order to accommodate them, Reich Labor Service camps were built. In 1940, the 'West Wall workers' left the region again, but the barrack camps remained. During the Second World War, the Wehrmacht deported millions of prisoners of war to the territory of the Reich for forced labor. Many were interned along the western border in former RAD camps. From 1940 to 1944, this included the Bevertberg camp. It was located about 350 meters from this spot in the direction of Berk, to the right of the road. From autumn 1940 to spring 1941, Polish prisoners of war were interned here. From autumn 1941, five barracks served as accommodation for about two hundred Soviet prisoners of war who had to do forced labour in agriculture and forestry. Many prisoners died of hunger and inhumane treatment in the first few months. There were also deaths from shootings. After 1945, a mass grave was discovered here."
