The ‘Ekeberg Stairs’ on the Svenskesletta Plain above Oslo were part of the German honorary cemetery "Ekeberg"created here by the Nazis in May 1940. Municipal land was confiscated for this purpose and private buildings were expropriated.
The cemetery consisted of a series of monumental steps connected by flat terraces full of swastikas and the German eagle.
In 1952, Oslo City Council closed the cemetery and moved the graves to Alfased. Most traces of the cemetery were removed or overgrown at the time, but the restored remains of the steps give a good idea of the scale of the original construction.
