Windermere Library

The first floor of this library is set up as a museum.

There are two exhibitions:

From Auschwitz to Ambleside
This exhibition focuses on the poignant story of a group of children who became known as "The Windermere Boys".
In August 1945 a group of Jewish children arrived to stay in hostels on the Calgarth Estate, just outside the village of Windermere.
The 300 Jewish children who came to Windermere in the Lake District in 1945 were orphans who had survived the war and had been liberated at or near Theresienstadt.
They were brought to Britain after the British government offered to accept 1,000 Jewish children to help them start a new life, but only 729 children could be found to send to Britain.
The exhibition also includes photographs from the BBC production "The Windermere Children".

Wings over Windermere
The exhibition highlights the Waterbird (the first successful British seaplane) and the White Cross Bay Aircraft Factory in Windermere, which built 35 Shorts Sunderland flying boats between 1941 and 1945.
