In November 1943, an American Liberator aircraft with 11 crew members crash-landed off the coast of Faro. Three Portuguese fishermen, Jaime Nunes, José Mascarenhas and his 13-year-old son Manuel, rowed to the aircraft in very heavy seas. They managed to rescue six of the crew members. After waiting for the sea to calm, they returned to shore. The pilots were taken to hospital and eventually repatriated to the United States.
