Fort Sint-Marie

Fort Sint-Marie II was built on the remains of Fort Sint-Marie I, built in the second half of the 16th century and played a major role in the Siege of Antwerp (1584-1585). Fort Sint-Marie II was built in the 19th century and was armed with the only torpedo installation in Belgium from 1881 onwards. The commander of the Fortress of Antwerp, General Victor Deguise, had his headquarters in this fort in 1914. The torpedo installation was blown up by the retreating Belgian army.

The fort was captured intact by the Germans in 1940, after which it was used as a depot.
