This French air base opened in 1928 on a former World War I battlefield. Trenches and shell holes were leveled and a major ammunition recovery operation was carried out. The base was expanded in the 1930s and reinforced in 1939 with additional French and British air units. The airport was captured by the Germans in June 1940 and renamed "Flugplatz A213/XI" in 1941. The base was bombed several times between 1943 and 1944. The air base was captured by the Allies on 30 August 1944 and renamed "A-62", a US Ninth Air Force airfield.
Adolf Hitler took a plane back to Gros Caillou here on 25 June 1940.
