Pont de l’Europe

An older bridge from 1897 stood here. This bridge was partially blown up by the French army on 12 October 1939. The Germans built a temporary bridge using an old Speyer pontoon. In October 1940, a 324-metre long wooden bridge was built. The old bridge was not repaired until June 1942. However, that bridge was completely blown up by the retreating German army on 27 November 1944. The American army built a floating bridge here in April 1945 to connect France with Germany.

The current bridge dates from 1960 and was named "Pont de l'Europe", symbolising the return of peace in Europe and in particular Franco-German reconciliation.

Adolf Hitler and his entourage visited the bridge on 30 June 1940.
