Stumbling Stone Schimmelpennincklaan 14

This small brass plaque (Stolperstein or tripstone), commemorates:

ANTHOON G. DAS, (born 1916, resistance fighter, arrested 20-6-1944 Utrecht, deported 1944 from Vught, Stalag IVb Mühlberg, liberated, succumbed 26-12-1946 Uttrecht)

Anthoon Gerrard Das was a profession-military who was active in the resistance from 1942. He was a member of the KP Oranje Vrijbuiters until its roll-up and later district leader of the LO Utrecht. During the arrest of a fellow resistance member, a notebook containing his name was found and he was arrested. Via the prison in Utrecht, he ended up in Camp Vught. From there he was deported to Stalag IVb Mühlberg and died after liberation on 26-12-1946 as a result of the hardships in the camps.

‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (trip stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque bears the victim's name, year of birth and place (usually a Concentration Camp) and date of death. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.’
