Indies Monument Ferwert

The ‘Indiëmonument’ commemorates three young East Indies veterans from the former municipality of Ferwerderadeel.

Sije van Dijk, Marrum (23-02-1925 - 21-01-1949)
Van Dijk was fatally injured when his car was shot at near Bungamas and died far from home. His resting place is the war cemetery in Pandu in Indonesia.

Hendrik Kroes, Blije (08-12-1928 - 19-02-1949)
On 14 February 1949, Kroes was seriously injured during a patrol in the area around Semarang in Central Java. He was admitted to the Elisabeth Hospital, where he died five days later. Kroes is also buried in a war cemetery in Indonesia, in the town of Candi.

Hessel Zijlstra, Ferwert (25-02-1925 - 10-10-1949)
Zijlstra was able to return, despite his injuries. He died in the Netherlands in his own hometown Ferwert and is also buried there.
