Memorial Stone Hamseweg 33

These memorial stones are here for war victims, deported and/or murdered in World War II. They are often placed as an alternative to the official Stolpersteine of Gunter Demnig's project. Where there is no Stolperstein but people still want to commemorate, this commemorative stone is used. In most cases, the stones are located in front of the last known residential address of the victims.

Here in Hoogland, this stone was placed:

‘Here lived Louis Blazer murdered in Auschwitz on 21-1-1943 36 years old’.

Louis Blazer had lived in Hoogland with widow Van Selm since 1930; he worked at Job, Baron van Boetzelaer's Kranenburg plant nursery. On 3 June 1941, the Sicherheitspolizei in Utrecht sent a request for a list of Jews living in the municipality. Already two days later they received a reply: ‘Herewith I have the honour to forward to you....'Two weeks later, Louis had suddenly disappeared, moved to The Hague. On 2 January 1943, he was arrested and taken to Westerbork. On 18 January 1943, Louis was deported to Auschwitz, where he was murdered immediately upon arrival on 21 January.
