Bombing Santa Cruz July 1797

Rear Admiral Nelson took over the commission and on 14 July set out flying his flag in the 74 gun ship of the line Theseus commanded by Captain Miller, with the 74 gun Colluden commanded by Captain Troubridge, the 74 gun Zealous commanded by Captain Hood, the 50 gu Leander commanded by Captain Thompson, the frigates Seahorse of 38 guns under Captain Free mantle, the 36 gun Emerald commanded by Captain Waller, the 32 gun Terischore commanded by Captain Bowen and the cutter Fox under Lieutenant Gibson, plus a bomb, the lightning commanded by Lieutenant Compton.
In total 393 cannons and 3,700 armed men.

The square was defended by Lieutenant General Gutierrez, Captain General of the Canary Islands, who prepared himself with great effectiveness for the defence, reinforcing the fortifications and thus making them very effective.
In total 91 cannons and 1669 defenders.
The mural was made by the well known and popular painter Stolko Aimov Gagamov for the portraits made on the stones and rocks of the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a work for which he is also popularly known amongst the residents of the capita, as the 'painter of stones' which he has been doing for years in a selfless manner.
