Memorial Sea-Mine disaster Ballymanus

This memorial commemorates the explosion of a sea mine washed up at this site on 10 May 1943, which claimed the lives of 18 boys and men aged between 14 and 34.

After noticing the floating mine, youngsters tried to bring it ashore with ropes. As the mine was dragged along the beach, it hit a rock and exploded. Eighteen bystanders were killed instantly and another died later. Apart from the dead and injured, the blast also damaged more than 40 houses in the nearby village.

Ireland was neutral during World War II and the population would not have been as aware of the dangers of unexploded ordnance as in countries involved in the war.

Several monuments in the village also commemorate this tragic event.
