This small brass plaque placed here in April 2024 (Stolperstein or Stumbling Stone) commemorates:
DAVID ABRAHAM SCHWARTZ, (born 1899, deported 1941 from Winterswijk, murdered 28-10-1941 Mauthausen).
On 8 and 9 September 1941, the first razzia of Jews took place in Gelderland. In Arnhem and the Achterhoek, 70 Jewish men including David Schwartz were rounded up and deported to Mauthausen. They all die
‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (trip stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque bears the victim's name, year of birth and place (usually a Concentration Camp) and date of death. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.’
