War Memorial Neroberg Wiesbaden

This 1930 memorial commemorates soldiers of the Gersdorff Fusilier Regiment (Kurhessisches No 80) and its military units killed during World War I.

Between 1914 and 1918, the regiment fought on both the western and eastern fronts. It was deployed in France, Belgium, Russia and Poland, among other places. After the armistice of 11 November 1918, the remnants of the regiment marched back to Germany. On 6 March 1919, the regiment was demobilised and disbanded.

Immediately after the end of the war, veterans of the regiment were already campaigning for the erection of a monument to commemorate their fallen comrades. However, Wiesbaden was in the Allied occupation zone and only after the departure of the British in 1930 could the construction of the monument begin, which was inaugurated in October the same year.

On the long sides are the years 1914-1915-1916-1917-1918, images of soldiers and the text: 15,680 soldiers kehrten nicht zu hause’.

Along the terrace towards the monument are stones with the names of the units and the number of killed.
