The text on the headstone reads:
'Here lies an unknown sailor who lost his life at the battle of Jutland, may/June 1916. Found at Skår midsummer eve 1916'.
The Battle of Jutland on 31 May and 1 June 1916 between the German and British navies was one of the greatest naval battles in history. British losses amounted to 6,093 men, 3 battlecruisers, 3 cruisers and 8 destroyers. German losses amounted to about 2,400 men and 11 ships of all kinds.
