In 2018, the Agency for Nature and Forests called on all cities and municipalities to plant a peace tree to commemorate the end of the First World War on November 11, 1918.
In Buggenhout Opstal, the peace tree was planted in the cemetery between the graves of the veterans.
The memorial plaque reads:
"Peace tree
2014-18
100 years of the Great War"
