Peace Monument Waasmunster-Sombeke

In May 2023, a Peace Monument was inaugurated at the cemetery behind the St. Rochus church in Sombeke by Mayor Bauwens and the Waasmunster Fighters' Union.

On the massive stone is a white dove of peace with a palm branch, made in stainless steel by NSB member Jean Zaman from Hamme.
Below it hangs a picture with the text:
"This Peace Rock has been dedicated as a memorial stone
to the fallen soldiers, our veterans
and the war victims of both world wars.
Be mindful of them."

This monument also commemorates the five victims who died in Sombeke when the Americans mistakenly dropped unnecessary bombs in January 1945. Because of the snow-covered landscape, they did not see that they were flying above a village.
