This monument commemorates the victims of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). The monument originally stood on a square near the Evangelical Church. After a reorganization of the city, it was moved and, during the expansion of the local hospital, it was finally moved to its current location at the Alter Friedhof Fritzlar on a citizen's initiative.
The monument is no longer entirely original. The eagle on the monument, originally made of precious metal, was removed during the Second World War and used for the war industry. The eagle is now depicted in stone.
