Air Observation Tower 802 - Maria Hoop

The air watch tower was built in 1953 by order of the Ministry of Defence. The tower was part of a network of 276 lookouts spread across the country between 1951 and 1956 to spot enemy aircraft flying lower than radar could detect. The tower was in use until 1964, when the Air Guard Corps in the region was disbanded. After that, the tower was transferred to the Protection of Population (BB). The tower in Maria Hoop is now one of only 19 remaining air guard towers.
